The Relationships between Parenting Stress and Depression among Mothers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: The Moderating Effects of Disability Acceptance

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study examined the moderating effect of disability acceptance in the relationships between parenting stress and depression.
Methods:A total of 195 questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 by collecting data on mothers with autism spectrum disorders aged 1 to 19.
Results:The moderating effect of disability acceptance was significant in the relationship between parenting stress and depression of mothers with autism spectrum disorder.
Conclusions:This study is meaningful in that it is important for mothers to accept their children’s disabilities in order to reduce the influence of childcare stress caused by their children’s autism disorder on the psychological difficulties of depression. This could be used as a foundation for developing counseling and education programs for mothers with children with autism spectrum disorders.
